The Queen’s Gambit: Dr Lubna Gusau’s Strategic Push for Senate”
By Aminu S.
In Zamfara’s often male-dominated political landscape, a new rhythm is gradually taking shape—one defined not by loud declarations, but by careful consultations, symbolic gestures, and a growing grassroots connection. At the center of this unfolding story is Dr. Lubna Muhammad Gusau, the Sarauniyar Gusau and Sarauniyar Kasar Hausa, whose recent engagements suggest a deliberate and strategic move toward contesting the Zamfara Central Senatorial seat.
Rather than launching her ambition with the usual political fanfare, Dr. Lubna has chosen a path deeply rooted in tradition, seeking the blessings of elders and respected figures in the state.
Her recent visits to influential leaders such as Alhaji Ibrahim Ruwan Doruwa, Alhaji Garba Bisu, and Senator Hassan Nasiha reflect a cultural and political understanding that, in northern Nigeria, legitimacy often begins with endorsement from community gatekeepers.
In a message shared publicly, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to consult widely:
“Alhamdulillah! Cikin ikon Allah na samu damar mika gaisuwar ban girma ga manyan jagororin mu… a yayin wannan gwagwarmaya ta neman kujerar Sanata.”
This approach is not merely ceremonial. In Zamfara, where political structures are closely tied to community leadership and moral authority, such consultations signal seriousness, humility, and readiness to lead.
It also positions her as a candidate who values inclusivity and collective decision-making qualities often demanded by constituents weary of disconnected leadership.
But beyond the traditional consultations, Dr. Lubna’s strategy also leans into youth engagement, an increasingly decisive factor in modern Nigerian politics.
Her donation of three vehicles to young supporters in Gusau and Tsafe local government areas stands out as both a gesture of appreciation and a calculated investment in grassroots mobilization.
By recognizing individuals like Kandahar, Dan Maliki, and Yusuf, she is not only rewarding loyalty but also building a network of motivated advocates at the community level especially in a region where youth often feel sidelined despite their numerical strength, such gestures resonate deeply.
Her message accompanying the donation underscores this intent:
“Domin karfafa gwiwar matasa… na mika kyautar motoci guda uku ga jajirtattun matasan mu…”
This blend of traditional respect and modern political engagement reflects a broader shift in Zamfara’s political dynamics.
Historically, the Zamfara Central Senatorial seat has been dominated by established political figures, with limited space for new entrants particularly women. Dr. Lubna’s emergence, therefore, represents more than a personal ambition; it signals a gradual opening of the political space.
Her titles "Sarauniyar Gusau and Sarauniyar Kasar Hausa also add a unique dimension to her candidacy.
They carry cultural weight, symbolizing leadership, service, and a connection to heritage. While traditional titles alone do not guarantee political success, they provide a platform of recognition and influence that can be effectively leveraged.
Observers note that her methodical approach by consulting elders, empowering youths, and communicating directly with the public suggests a long-term strategy rather than a rushed political bid.
It is a campaign being built quietly, but intentionally.
As the political atmosphere ahead of future elections begins to take shape, Dr. Lubna Muhammad Gusau’s moves are likely to draw increasing attention.
Whether her consultations will translate into broad political support remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: her entry into the race is already reshaping conversations about leadership, inclusion, and the role of women in Zamfara politics.
